NASW Press FAQ from Authors

Is my book proposal right for NASW Press?

NASW Press publishes scholarly books that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice in social work. NASW Press books are used widely by professional social workers and as textbooks in schools of social work.

Do you publish dissertations?

NASW Press does not publish doctoral dissertations or master’s theses.

How does the review process work?

A book proposal is reviewed initially by the NASW Press Executive Editor. If approved for further review, it is assigned to two reviewers who have both professional experience and expertise in the subject area. If approved at this level, the proposal is sent to the chair of the Book Committee, who confers with the Executive Editor on the final decision to either accept or decline the manuscript for publication.

What do I need to include in my book proposal?

A book proposal should include a complete description of the book’s purpose, the potential audience, and the author’s qualifications. A completed manuscript is not necessary. If the proposal meets NASW Press criteria at the initial stage, additional material will be required for the review process.

What are the criteria for review?

If a book proposal is determined to be appropriate for NASW Press, the author must provide a curriculum vitae, prospectus, outline, table of contents, and sample chapters before beginning the review process.

When will I hear from you?

All book proposal submissions are acknowledged upon receipt. The entire review process may take up to four months to complete.
