Gerald Schamess, MSS, is professor of social work at Smith College School
for Social Work, Northampton, Massachusetts, and editor of the Smith College Studies in
Social Work. He has published widely on treatment process and group treatment for children
and adolescents, and has practiced clinically since 1958.
Anita Lightburn, MSS, MEd, EdD, is dean and Elizabeth
Marting Truehaft Professor at Smith College School for Social Work and a member of the
Academy of Practice. She has taught clinical social work practice for 25 years and is an
author and consultant. Before assuming the deanship in 1994, she was a practicing
clinician and an associate professor at Columbia University School of Social Work, New
York. Recent research includes family support for at-risk families and knowledge
development to support work with traumatized children and families.
