About the Editors
Florence Safford, DSW, one of the first home care practitioners in the
United States, has been a medical social worker for more than four decades. During her 15
years as director of social work at the Isabella Geriatric Center in New York City, she
developed an innovative training program for families of mentally impaired elderly people.
This program led to one of the first support groups for families struggling with
AlzheimerÆs disease and related disorders. Dr. Safford is a professor emeritus in the
social work department at Florida International University, Miami, where she had been
chair of the Concentration in Services to the Elderly program.
George I. Krell, MS, has had a distinguished career in the health care
field. He served as an assistant deputy commissioner for the Boston Department of Health
and Hospitals, which involved social services, utilization review, and physician relations
for the systemÆs acute hospital, long-term-care facilities, emergency services, and the
community outreach clinics. He was the first director of social services for the State of
CaliforniaÆs Medicaid program. Before retirement, he was director of social work for the
Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Florida.
