The Occupational Social Work Advantage

Paul A. Kurzman, PhD, ACSW, is professor, Hunter College School of Social Work, City University of New York, where he chairs the school's World of Work Field of Practice. He is the author of "Industrial­Occupational Social Work" in the 18th edition of the Encyclopedia of Social Work (1987) and numerous articles on occupational policy and practice in Social Work, Social Casework, and Employee Assistance Quarterly. He is also an editor or author of five books, including (with Sheila H. Akabas) Labor and lndustrial Settings: Sites for Social Work Practice (1979) and Work, Workers, and Work Organizations (1982).

Sheila H. Akabas, PhD, is professor and chair of the World of Work Field of Practice, School of Social Work, and director, Center for Social Policy and Practice in the Workplace, Columbia University, New York. Principal investigator on numerous projects funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and other governmental agencies and several private foundations, she has also provided consultation to corporations; trade unions; social, rehabilitation, and mental health facilities; and educational institutions on the many issues involved in service delivery to workers.
