Foundations of Social Work Practice in the Field of Aging

A Competency-Based Approach

Roberta R. Greene, PhD, MSW, is professor and Louis and Ann Wolens Centennial Chair in Gerontology at the School of Social Work, University of Texas-Austin. Dr. Greene is author of numerous publications, including Resiliency: An Integrated Framework for Practice, Research, and Policy (NASW Press, 2002); Social Work with the Aged and Their Families (Aldine De Gruyter, 2000); Social Work Practice: A Risk and Resilience Perspective (Thompson/Brooks/Cole, 2007); and Contemporary Issues of Care (Haworth Press, 2007). She currently is conducting research for the John Templeton Foundation.

Harriet L. Cohen, PhD, LCSW, is assistant professor in the Department of Scoial Work at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth. She currently serves in national leadership roles in social work and aging, such as a John A. Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar. Her social work practice experience spans 26 years in a variety of nonprofit organizations to build community and organizational capacity to serve older adults and their families. Her research and publication interests include forgiveness and older Holocaust survivors, spirituality in midlife and older adults, and older lesbians and gay men issues.

Colleen M. Galambos, DSW, is a professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Social Work Education and served as the former editor-in-chief of Health & Social Work. She was a curriculum consultant to the John A. Hartford Faculty Development Institute Project with the Council on Social Work Education and was a member of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations Professional and Technical Advisory Committee on Long-Term Care. She has written numerous journal articles and book chapters in gerontology.

Nancy P. Kropf, PhD, formerly at the University of Georgia, is now professor and director of the School of Social Work at Georgia State University. Her area of research and scholarship is late-life caregiving relationships, including rural grandparents raising grandchildren. She was a John A. Hartford Geriatric Social Work Scholar (1999-2001). Dr. Kropf has published numerous articles and books, including Teaching Aging: Syllabi, Resources Infusion Materials for the Social Work Curriculum (Council on Social Work Education, 2002); Gerontological Social Work: Knowledge, Service Settings, and Special Populations (Wadsworth, 2000); and Developmental Disabilities: Handbook for interdisciplinary practice (Brookline Books, 1995).
